The tone is set as soon as you walk in. Chandeliers hang from the ceilings, artwork covers the walls, and there are antiques and objet d'art everywhere you look. Georgian features underpin it all, but the styles are mixed with real flair and more than the occasional Bohemian flourish. It's no museum, though. This is a family home and it's meant to be used. The turquoise sofas in the peacock-themed drawing room and the oatmeal Chesterfield in the sitting room next door are as comfortable as they are good-looking, there's a grand dining room to eat in together, and a kitchen that's a pleasure to cook in.

Upstairs in the main Georgian villa there are five bedrooms (one super-king, three kings and a four-person bunk room) and four bathrooms, no less opulent than downstairs. One has a super-king bed and an en-suite with a bath, separate shower and his-and-hers sinks. Another has a roll-top bath with views to the hills and forests beyond. All five have a TV, including the bunk room.

Your booking includes the villa plus the adjacent Coach House, a separate building a few steps from the main house. There are no TVs in it, deliberately, for guests who'd rather do without. Inside you'll find one super-king with an en-suite roll-top bath, walk-in shower and WC, plus two further kings.

The inside is impressive. Outside might win. The view is framed by architraved windows and French doors and it follows you from room to room until it eventually pulls you out into the garden. Hot tub, firepit, BBQ, plenty of places to sit and eat, and a large lawn spreading out in front of it all for a game of bowls or croquet. The gardens are magnificent, full of unusual trees, fruit trees, rose bushes and magnolias, with corners for children to disappear into for an afternoon.

Should you want to walk further, head to The Alma for lunch, 1.3 miles away and one of several good pubs nearby. From here it's three miles to Ross-on-Wye, half that to the Forest of Dean, and less than half a mile to the nearest fishing lake and golf club.

The Living Spaces
Two living rooms, both stylish and both properly comfortable. The peacock-themed drawing room with its turquoise sofas is the one everyone gravitates to, and the sitting room next door with the oatmeal Chesterfield is where people end up when they want somewhere quieter. The Outdoors
A five-person hot tub with views across the valley, a BBQ, a firepit and two seating areas, plus a patio with a modern pergola for eating outside. The large lawn is set up for croquet and bowls. The gardens themselves are magnificent, full of unusual trees, fruit trees, rose bushes and magnolias. Good for exploring, good for children, good for sitting still.

The Bedrooms
Five bedrooms in the main house and three more in the Coach House. Two super-kings, five kings and a four-person bunk room, with bathrooms to match: roll-top baths, his-and-hers sinks and views out to the hills and forests.
