Where are the best places for a dog friendly holiday in the UK?

The best places for a holiday with a dog are Anglesey and the Llŷn Peninsula for beaches, the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District for long walks, the Cotswolds for gentle walking, and the Lake District for fells. All five have dog friendly cottages that work for couples, families and bigger groups.

Anglesey and North Wales: dog friendly cottages by the sea

Anglesey is where we host the most dogs. In the last year, 285 of our 1,122 stays on the island had a pet on the booking. The council only limits dogs on parts of seven beaches, and only in summer, so most of the coast is open all year.

For a big group, Cil Y Gwynt in Rhoscolyn sleeps 18 across eight bedrooms and takes up to two dogs at £25 per dog per stay. For a family-sized trip, Mor Awel at Church Bay sleeps 8 in four bedrooms, takes up to two dogs and has a secure enclosed garden.

Across the Menai Strait, Coastal Manor sleeps 20 in ten bedrooms. They put out dog treats on arrival, and an electric gate sits behind the five acres of private grounds. The nearest dog friendly beaches are about three miles away, and the pet fee is £25 per dog.

Most Anglesey beaches allow dogs all year. From 1 May to 30 September, parts of seven are closed to dogs: Beaumaris, Benllech, Cemaes Bay, Llanddwyn, Llanddona, Porth Dafarch and Trearddur Bay. Signs mark each ban area, and dogs must be on leads on the promenades at Benllech, Cemaes Bay and Trearddur Bay.

Rhosneigr, Red Wharf Bay, Church Bay and Bull Bay are not on the council's list. That makes them handy bases for a beach break. Holy Island is different: Trearddur Bay and Porth Dafarch are on the list, so check the rules before you go. Browse every home on the island in our Anglesey holiday cottages, or the Llŷn Peninsula for the mainland side.

The Yorkshire Dales: dog friendly cottages for the whole pack

The Yorkshire Dales is where our guests are most likely to bring a dog: 59 of 198 stays last year, or three in ten. It is walking country, with sheep in most fields and dry-stone walls you will soon know well.

The classic walk is the Malham Cove and Janet's Foss circular. It is about 4.3 miles and takes around two hours from the Malham visitor centre, where parking is paid. Keep dogs on leads near the edge of the limestone pavement and around livestock. The rock is slippery when wet, so take care.

Two Trees Cottage in Hetton is two adjoining cottages that sleep 11 across six bedrooms. It has a fully fenced back garden, a £25 pet fee per dog and a hot tub at each cottage. Micklewood near Skipton sleeps 10 in six bedrooms, with a large secure garden and a £25 pet fee. For a bigger group, Malham Cottages sleeps 17 across ten bedrooms.

All our homes in the area are in Yorkshire Dales holiday cottages. If you want a holiday cottage with fenced garden for dogs, the Yorkshire Dales is a strong choice.

The Peak District: dog friendly walks and stepping stones

The Peak District sits between Manchester, Sheffield and Derby, so for many guests it is a Friday-night drive. A quarter of our stays there bring a pet: 90 of 374 last year.

Dovedale is the walk to do. The National Trust trail from Ilam Park to the Dovedale stepping stones is 1.5 miles. There are water bowls in the Dovedale car park, and the tea room sells dog friendly ice cream. The Trust gives the area two paw prints, which means bowls, bins and dog friendly walks, but not dogs everywhere.

Sheep are the main event in the White Peak, so use a short lead around them. If cattle come towards you, the National Trust says to let the dog off the lead and call it back when it is safe.

Stanage Barn just outside Hathersage sleeps 2 in one bedroom and has a boot room with a dog cleaning area, which is handy after a muddy mile up to Stanage Edge. Worth knowing: it’s 500 yards from the nearest road, so the hosts bring you up by buggy and it’s on foot from there. Wildboar Manor near Macclesfield sleeps 30 across 11 bedrooms, so it works well for a group trip or a big family getaway. See the rest in our Peak District holiday homes.

The Cotswolds: dog friendly holidays at a gentler pace

The Cotswolds is the gentlest of the five regions. The walking is rolling rather than rugged, and the Cotswold Way runs 102 miles between Bath and Chipping Campden. A quarter of our Cotswolds stays bring a pet, 34 of 140 last year.

Ebrington Manor sleeps 16 across eight bedrooms, with enclosed gardens and lawns, and footpaths from the village link to the Cotswold Way. Painswick Manor sleeps 24 in nine bedrooms and takes up to two dogs. 10 Bowmoor Edge sits on Bowmoor Lake near Lechlade-on-Thames, sleeps 15 and has a £25 pet fee.

It is worth knowing that not every Cotswold garden has a fence. At Shepherd's Rest and Acres Barn near Cirencester, the gardens are not fully enclosed, so dogs need watching outside. If you want an enclosed garden holiday let, check the listing closely. Everything else is in our Cotswolds holiday cottages.

The Lake District: dog friendly cottages and a steam train

The Lake District is the main destination for fell walking with a dog. Eskdale has a bonus: the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway takes dogs on its steam trains for £5, on a short lead and out of the premium carriages.

Skyfall in Eskdale sleeps 16 across eight bedrooms and is set up for outdoorsy breaks, with two hot tubs and a £50 pet fee per dog. It feels like a luxury dog-friendly retreat with hot tub. Southend Terrace near Penrith sleeps 8 in four bedrooms, both cottages have enclosed outdoor space, and the fee is £25. We have fewer homes in the Lakes than in the Dales or on Anglesey, so the best weekends go early. See them all in Lake District holiday homes.

The practical bit

The rules worth knowing before you go

A few rules apply wherever you take the dog in England and Wales:

  • Leads on open access land. The Countryside Code says dogs must be on a lead on open access land between 1 March and 31 July, livestock or not, and around livestock all year.
  • Livestock worrying is a serious offence. Since 18 March 2026 it can mean an unlimited fine, and the law now covers roads and paths as well as fields. Defra explains the change.
  • If cattle chase you, let go. Let the dog off the lead and get yourself to safety. The dog will usually find its own way out.
  • Bag it and bin it. That includes beaches. Anglesey's dog fouling order covers them too.

What to look for when booking a dog friendly cottage

Check four things before you book a dog friendly cottage: how many dogs the house takes, whether the garden is fully enclosed, what the pet fee is, and the rules on sofas and beds. Many of our homes ask that dogs stay off beds and soft furnishings, so pack the dog's own bed.

The rest is local knowledge, and it is worth a minute of research:

  • the nearest beach that allows dogs in summer
  • whether the walk from the door crosses fields of sheep
  • where the dog can dry off before it reaches the sofa
  • the nearest vet, just in case

Browse every one of our dog friendly cottages, or start with the region that suits your dog best. The dog will not help with the packing. First in the car.
