Rhosneigr restaurants: where to eat in the village

The five Rhosneigr restaurants we'd send you to are the Oyster Catcher, Sandy Mount House, Mojo's, Medra and Blue Olive. They run from a glass-fronted beach restaurant to Mediterranean plates you wouldn't expect to find above a pub on Anglesey.

Where to eat in Rhosneigr: the short version

For dinner with a view over the dunes, book the Oyster Catcher. For a group, Sandy Mount House has two private dining rooms. Mojo's does crêpes and galettes by day and steak night on Thursdays, Medra is the late one, and Blue Olive is the quiet pick.

Oyster Catcher

The Oyster Catcher sits just behind the dunes of Traeth Llydan and is something of a landmark in the village: a glass-fronted building with floor-to-ceiling windows, wooden balconies and a terrace that fills up fast with families straight off the beach.

Menu specialities: Seasonal British cooking and fresh seafood in the upstairs restaurant, including oysters from the Menai Strait. Outside, Pat's Shack does loaded fries, hand-stretched pizzas and street-food tacos from noon, daily, as and when the Welsh weather allows.

Dogs: Welcome, with a puppuccino and a breakfast bowl on the menu for them. Seating for dogs is limited inside, with plenty of room outside.

Downstairs, Will's Bar opens from 10am, and there are heated beach huts too.

Worth knowing: the restaurant kitchen closes at 8:30pm. Guests have asked us where to go after that, and the answer is Mojo's (Wednesday to Saturday) or Medra.

Mojo's Rhosneigr

Mojo's has been a Rhosneigr institution since 2005: part café, part creperie, part bistro, with a nautical theme that makes it feel instantly familiar.

Menu specialities: French-style crêpes and buckwheat galettes by day, alongside breakfast and brunch. By night, local ribeye steaks and fresh Menai crab, with steak night every Thursday.

Dogs: Welcome, as long as they're well behaved. Mojo's Facebook page says that if dogs come at the right time, there might be a sausage waiting for them.

Mojo's opens from 10am daily and stays open into the evening Wednesday to Saturday. Book online in summer.

Medra

Medra is the bar and kitchen just off the High Street that past visitors will know as Starvation, named after Starvation Island (Ynys Feurig) off the coast. The new name honours Welsh history and language. It's a modern surf bar that stays busy late into the evening.

Menu specialities: Gourmet burgers, including the Smashed Bacon Burger, crispy fish sandos and a solid list of house cocktails.

Medra is the late one, with regular live music. It's the obvious place to end up after an afternoon of windsurfing.

Dogs: Ask ahead. Past visitors mention staff handing out dog treats, which is a good sign.

Sandy Mount House

Sandy Mount House is on the High Street in the middle of the village: a restaurant, bar and seven-room hotel with cosy corners and log fires. It's dressed up just enough to work for a romantic dinner or a family meal after a day on the water.

Menu specialities: Modern British and Welsh dishes built around seasonal produce, from head chef Ethan Ward's kitchen. Expect generous, comforting food, a freshly made kids' menu, and craft ales and cocktails at the bar.

Dogs: Welcome. Sandy Mount House describes itself as "mad about dogs", and its doors are always open to them.

Booking ahead is a good idea. For groups, there are two private dining areas, one seating 12 and the other 18. That's the simplest way to feed a whole house party in one sitting.

Blue Olive Rhosneigr

Blue Olive is on the first floor above the Y Morfa pub on Ffordd Maelog. It's the quiet one, a step removed from the beach crowds without being far from them.

Menu specialities: Mediterranean small plates and European dishes made with locally sourced Welsh produce, paired with a Mediterranean-leaning wine list and cocktails.

Dogs: Ask ahead before you bring the dog upstairs. Y Morfa, the pub downstairs, welcomes dogs in the bar.

Opening days and hours vary through the year, so check Blue Olive's Facebook page before you go. If it's closed, Y Morfa downstairs is still a pub.
