Aira Force
Location: Near Ullswater, CA11 0JS
One of the most well-known waterfalls in the Lake District, Aira Force is a must-visit. The walk starts from a National Trust car park and takes you through ancient woodland, with well-maintained paths making it suitable for most walkers. The waterfall plunges 65 feet into a rocky pool, surrounded by ferns and moss-covered rocks. There are several viewpoints along the route where you can take in the sight and sound of the falls. For a longer walk, you can continue up to Gowbarrow Fell for stunning views over Ullswater.
Stock Ghyll Force
Location: Ambleside, LA22 9BX
A short but rewarding walk from Ambleside town centre leads to Stock Ghyll Force, a spectacular 60-foot waterfall hidden within a woodland gorge. The circular route takes around half an hour and follows a well-marked path through the trees. In spring, the area is covered in daffodils, adding an extra layer of beauty to the walk. The viewing platform offers a great vantage point to watch the water tumbling down in several streams.
Scale Force
Location: Near Buttermere, CA13 9XA
Considered the tallest waterfall in the Lake District, Scale Force plunges around 170 feet down a narrow gorge. The walk to reach it starts from the shores of Crummock Water and follows a scenic but often boggy path through woodland and open countryside. Although the route can be challenging in wet conditions, the effort is well worth it. The towering cliffs around the falls create an almost hidden world, making it one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the region.
Colwith Force
Location: Near Little Langdale, LA22 9NY
This lovely waterfall is nestled in woodland near Little Langdale and can be reached by a scenic riverside walk. The waterfall drops in a series of cascades, with some sections reaching up to 40 feet. The surrounding trees and mossy rocks create a peaceful atmosphere, making it a great spot to pause and enjoy the surroundings. For a longer adventure, the route can be combined with a walk to Skelwith Force, another nearby waterfall.
Lodore Falls
Location: Near Derwentwater, CA12 5UX
Located at the southern end of Derwentwater, Lodore Falls is best visited after heavy rain when the water tumbles dramatically over the rocks. The walk to the falls is relatively short and easy, starting near the Lodore Falls Hotel. The cascade has inspired poets, including Robert Southey, who wrote a poem about its endless rushing waters. The area offers great trails around the Borrowdale Valley for people looking for a longer walk.
